Project 4 Poster Series

This project is about making a poster series all related to a single festival. Each event has its own lineup/event but stylistically each poster has similar style. I looked at all of my favorite media and tried to find a unifying factor between works that I liked. So I kept picking artists at random and ended finding that a couple that I picked had butterflies motifs in their work somehow. I kept exploring and found the different reasons why they chose to include butterflies in their work. Each different artists uses butterflies differently and I hope to convey how they feel about butterflies in each poster. So the events I picked were:

Music Set ft Playboi Carti: In an interview he said “I love butterflies. I have a butterfly chain, butterfly ring, butterfly tat. I feel like that’s me, watching myself blossom, getting over my insecurities, getting confident, and just rising. Just spreading my wings and flying.” He has plenty of butterfly motifs in his dressing and his promotion. I want my poster to give that same sense of “growing” that he is referring to. I was personally inspired by this poster and this piece of tour merch:

Fashion show featuring Alexander McQueen:

Luxury fashion house Alexander McQueen has taken inspiration from butterflies thorough the years. The house has been known for rebellious creations and unconventional runway shows. They have also been known for their darker, gothic aesthetic. For my poster, I plan on turning the image below into a poster, I plan on using a darker color for the background to get the darker atmosphere of the house.

Arts exhibit:

I also plan on having an arts exhibit in the festival. I was inspired by this Van Gogh painting and so I want to make an art exhibit based on nature art.

The Name of the Arts Festival: Butterfly Festival
The date, time, and location of the event: September 1, 2018 in London
Relevant ticket information including price, how to purchase: Price will be $200 for a weekend pass. Tickets available at caterpillar.com.

My goal with the posters is to capture the variety of expressions that butterflies can capture. For the Playboi Carti show I want the poster to give the illusion of growth and being free to do as one pleases since that is the kind of music he makes. For the fashion show I want to have a darker almost gothic poster, to resemble the Alexander McQueen house. For the art exhibit I want to represent the calmness that butterflies can bring.

I like all the vibrant colors in this palette. I want my festival to be high energy and this color set really communicates that.

Here is another palette that I like. I want to stay away from monochromatic palettes since they do not work for what I want to achieve with my poster. I want colors to contrast with each other to make my posters more colorful.

Here is another color palette that I found that I also like. It is very a very natural color palette, so it makes sense to use it. It’s not too lively but, I like the darker colors that it uses, so I’m thinking bout experimenting with it.

I have been looking at 3 different fonts for my posters. I plan on using the same font across all 3 events to unify them. I have considered

PT Sans Narrow Bold

I like this narrow, bold version of this sans serif. It’s modern and loud and still somewhat elegant which is the feeling I want to go for in my posters.

Bungee

This font is also very wide and bold. It attracts attention so I am thinking about using these for headings. This font has no lowercase letters so I am thinking about using a less loud font for the poster info. I am thinking about combining this with a more “normal” font.

I decided to go for two different layouts for each iteration, one with the graphics on the left and the text on the right and another layout with the graphics on the bottom half and the text on top. In order to tie the series together I used the same grid, same font and the same color or very similar color scheme.

From the feedback I got I decided to go with the first series. I liked it more because of the color palette. I felt it was more lively and I that I could take that series into a more interesting direction. During my critique I was told that my series did not really feel like a series and that I should try to remedy that by using the same colors across all the posters. Looking back I agree with the critique, the first series did not feel like a series compared to my second series so I tried to remedy that by only using the same colors across all the posters. I liked the colors on my first concert poster and felt that the boldness of that palette could be used across all my posters.

During class we were broken up into groups and we discussed our posters. We discussed how we used grids, typography, color and how cohesive our series were.

Last critique I was told that my series did not look like a series, so I tried to remedy this by using the exact same grid and use the same colors across all of my posters and kept using the same layout across all of them. Looking at them now, I think I overdid it and now the posters look too similar. For the next critique I will try to mess around with the layout so that the posters look different but still look like they belong as a series. I also want to extra detail to the images for art’s sake.

Here is the series I presented. I did my best to play around with my previous grids to get different posters that still felt like they belonged to the same series. I kept the same grid for the fashion show since it was a pretty formal grid so I wanted to keep it for that specific poster. I added extra paintbrushes to the art poster so that I could rearrange my text layout so that it would look different. I was hoping the similar paint brushes would create a sense of rhythm. And for the concert poster I wanted to address some feedback I got that said that my previous posters felt too divided between a text area and a graphic area. So I tried to mix both of those sections together to create a more united poster. I did this by moving my text to the bottom and then having the butterflies everywhere.

I made 2 iterations on the concert poster. I wanted to play around with the layout so I made 2 different versions, one with the text slanted and one without. I tried out the slant so the poster would have a wilder feel to mirror the type of concert happening.

From the feedback I got, I think I will go with the slanted concert poster, if I can get the spacing and grid in order I think it can convey the feeling that I want the poster to evoke.

Here are the 3 posters I presented for my final critique.

Overall, I was pretty happy with how they turned out. The biggest changes I made was lowering the size on all the text. It was way too big considering that most of the fonts on text aren’t that big so most of the smaller texts are around size 16.

On on the concert poster I fixed some of the spacing in the text so that the grid effect was still there. I also played with some of the placement of the butterflies so that I can add more.

On the fashion show I added an extra column of text to get a 4 column grid which ended up working better with the pen toll image that I had compared to the 3 column grid.

On the art show poster I also added text to make a 4 column grid which also worked better with the text. I also made the brush diagonal and made the tip point to the title of the event which helped me use the brush for emphasis on my text. It also was a better use of space in my poster since

I was happy with the feedback that I got. People liked the color palette that I used and how it unified my designs while still giving each poster their own identity. People also noticed how each poster uses butterflies and color in their own ways. The concert poster is supposed to be more chaotic so it has bold butterfly colors all over the poster of different sizes and angles. The fashion poster has a more refined, strict grid and has the purple in the background which is supposed to be more elegant since its supposed to be a high fashion show. The art poster has the butterfly next to the paintbrush to communicate what the festival and the events are about. The typographical hierarchy that I was going for was also communicated, people can easily read what the event and all the info about it.

Some changes I would make are moving my text down a little bit on the art exhibit poster since theres a little too much space on the bottom of the poster and fix some of the awkward wording in the posters so that the text could also communicate what the events are supposed to be.
