Why impressions are important

You might think this is an article about first impressions, it isn’t. I would like to pursue the term “impression” in the context of how you are impressed by events in day to day life. To put it better, everything you see, hear or experience will definitely have some impact on you. This might seem like a generalized idea, but think about it in the context of your everyday life situations. Wherever you are, or what you do, some of these things might happen to you:

1. You take a walk after a long day of work, feeling dazed and tired, and as you walk you keep thinking about different, pressing things in your life, when suddenly, an old friend goes by, you acknowledge him, and say hello. After this, a conversation begins about an interesting topic, making you both engaged. You share laughs and opinions, and after a while, you close it down, say your goodbyes, and go your separate ways. As you are back on track, you might notice that meeting had an impact on your mood and train of thought. This is the impact the impression has had on you from the contact in your previous conversation, pretty neat I’d say. It is impressive to see how an event like this can offer so much momentum to trigger a small change that can impact your mood.

2. You are in possession of a consistent sum of money for whatever reason, and so, you are on your way to do your daily routines like maybe going to work, going out, doing this and that. Everything goes smoothly as you meet your daily goals and finally arrive home. You are refreshed and keen to figure out ways to spend your money, and so you check your pocket where you carefully placed the stash. Upon reaching in, you discover the cash is gone. Panic rolls in, as you search every part of your clothes that can store cash. You are puzzled, and rightly so. Everything is paced back, from the moment you got the money, where you put it, did you take it out, where it might have fallen, you might even curse your entire day. Such a shame. Everything was going so well, no there’s no more reason to be motivated, so you feel crushed and defeated. “Where is it?” that question might stay for a while, but these turn of events have triggered a very low state, that only a safety net will fill. Anyway, this is an illustration of the bad side of impressions.

3. You go on a diet to reach a slimmer figure, so you start to do exercise routines and eat less sugary and fat foods. The idea is really nice, and by projecting forward, you can see yourself looking better in the future. Days go by and you start to see these new habits require some degree of sacrifice, but you push on. You get tired and less motivated to do your routine by the book, so you enjoy an occasional delicious side dish. Still pushing on, you gain some momentum and feel satisfied. After a few weeks, a major event in your life disrupts your routine, and little by little, you start picking other habits regarding eating and exercise. After some time, you find yourself enjoying only delicious meals at irregular intervals and doing less work out. You feel kind of sad, but yet somehow satisfied you gave it a go. It’s always nice to know many lifestyles. A mix of events leaves you confused but with the memory of a journey that leads you in your previous lifestyle.

These are just a few examples to illustrate how impressions work. Even the most simple things like who you eat your food with or what your interests are trigger impressions on your mind and emotions. One can argue that choosing certain activities can enhance your mood and many turn of events can do otherwise. Although it might seem like a trivial argument, acknowledging the dynamics of impressions can take us on a special journey, to change our moods. Easier said than done, but moods come and go, just like impressions from current and past events. As I end my train of thoughts in writing I am curios to ask, what event in your life has given you an interesting impression?
