The Dove

Peace was brokered and broken
the doves revealed different hues
tension and hysteria flooded the cities
suppressed with the power, to abuse.

Smoke signals and cries for help
the wait needed to end
surrounded by rabid enemies, he wondered
how long he’d have to pretend?

Guns were fired, knives were sharpened
the serial killers scoured for more fools
he thought he’d be more than target practice
if he challenged and broke the rules.

We need a hero, they said
Reinforcements are needed, he implored
now he served the exact demands
in territories he never wished to explore.

Birds of a feather
fly away at the sounds of a gunshot
while one stands his ground
for the freedom they all sought.

Destiny was the will of the compass
clergymen claimed yet hesitant to reiterate
the country will strive, the politicians also said
with citizens, the collateral, and genocide, deliberate.

He thinks of his sense of duty
hidden under the rubble of false love and pride
for a country whose idea of avenging
is a 21 gun salute and a We Tried.

“Dying alone, with them in my breast pocket”
He continues with a heavy heart
“Who will teach my children the right from the wrong?”
Now nothing could tell them apart.

As he scoured through blood that wasn’t his
dog-tags lay strewn about his midst
knowing full well, his number was up
he thought of a time when he will be missed

Bullets continued to enter his chest
with more blood that joined the rest
he kept his eyes open at their behest
while the birds returned to their nest.
