You awake in the morning and smile at your partner, before offering him or her a cup of fresh coffee. You say, “Good morning, how did you sleep?” before you give each other a hug and kiss. You can’t help but smile.

This is the start to a good day of healthy relationship-ing.

How do we know that?

Having been in toxic intimate relationships before I found the love of my life, I can tell you what separates healthy love from a harmful relationship.

The smallest gestures, from the heart, can make all the difference in the world when it comes to sharing a life. Doing the dishes, tidying up the yard, or making a simple cup of tea or coffee for your partner says so much.

Simple kindness, that comes with ease, is a critical part of the respect within a partnership. It should never be a chore to do something thoughtful, it should be a natural act. If you cannot show kindness to one another, there is a deep rooted problem.

I once was in a relationship where common courtesies were never practiced by my partner. He simply didn’t know how to think enough to make me a coffee when he made his. Nor did he feel the need, or desire, to simply say kind things or ask genuine questions of me. It just wasn’t something he had learned in his 50 years of life. He was a narcissist, and relied heavily on my ego stroking and continual waiting on him, hand and foot. It was a very imbalanced, and toxic household.
