Unlock Your Subconscious by Keeping a Dream Journal

(And figure out why you keep dreaming about those damn Musketeers.)

Keeping a Dream Journal is a great way to get to know your own mind, and after a few months of diligent record keeping you will begin to read the symbols of your own subconscious like a very odd open book. For example, dreaming about your teeth falling out can mean you’re anxious while being naked in a dream can be a sign of embarrassment! Unfortunately, I don’t have fucking clue what all these musketeers mean.

Falling and flying are two common motifs in a dreamscape: falling can signify a sense of anxiety while flying represents a general feeling of freedom. However, if, while flying, you encounter a musketeer priming his musket in mid-air, it’s a bit more difficult to pin down the dream’s meaning. There just isn’t an entry for “flying comma musketeer” in my dream dictionary. I’m at a loss.

Some people might think it would be fun to have a dream or two about a musketeer, but what I’m talking about here is the chronic, near constant intrusion of these 18th Century soldiers into my precious REM cycles. I should stress now that these aren’t the “all for one and one for all” Musketeers. That at least I could understand! No. These are all just regular musketeers. Common, dirty, meaningless foot soldiers who have no place in my unconscious.

Got it? Pretty clear what’s going on here, right? Right! Now imagine, just as your mother is about to strike the dinner gong, a musketeer waltzes in and starts going on about how a well trained British musketeer can fire four rounds in a minute. (!!!)
