The 10 Most Influential Chicago Athletes in the Last 50 Years

I started watching Chicago sports when I was about seven or eight years old in the early 60s. Just to clarify, that’s the 1960s, not the 1860s. I remember the Bears’ 1963 championship and the 1963…

New Year Eve memory.

We planned a two-day trip to the capital city on the New Year eve. A usual thing, you may say, but I had a strong feeling this journey would be special.

And the magic did start right away.

We took our seats on a night express. I was looking for a book in my backpack when I heard bells jingling.

“Santa travels with us?” — I wondered.

And I was almost right. A middle-aged man with a solid belly took his seat in front of us. He wore a red sweater with a Christmas deer and small bells jingling. His nose and cheeks were red (because of the alcohol he had drunk on a Christmas party, as we figured out later).

We talked to the man. About life, work, and love. It felt good. Like meeting an old friend.

It was 3 a.m. I dozed off. Had pretty strange dreams.

We arrived three hours later. Felt exhausted still inspired. It was the day before the New Year!

Since we arrived early in the morning almost every place was closed. We went for a long walk. There were Christmas decorations everywhere and no people around. Perfect, don’t you think?

We finally got to our special place — a square near the university — where we bought the best mulled wine. A man wearing a bandanna, jean jacket, and a large backpack came to us.

“I want to celebrate the New Year right. So I need vodka. Can you help an old rocker?” — he said.

We gave him some money. Everyone deserves to celebrate holidays as they want.

Later we found ourselves in a bar. We drank cider and ate oysters. It was 11 a.m. of December 31. Why not?

We bought some wine. Drank it in a hotel room. Had really nice sex and fell into a deep sleep.

Waking up in the evening we remembered that we bought tickets to the cinema. We ran all the way and got there on time… almost.

The film was good and thought-provoking. Discussed it all the way to a cafe. After several unsuccessful tries, we found a place to eat.

Midnight was close. I wanted to be near the Christmas tree waiting for New Year, so we went to the central square. There were thousands of people. The holiday spirit was in the air. Still, we didn’t feel comfortable.

Looking for a more private place we went up the hill near the square. There was a fantastic view. The whole capital city was waiting for a miracle.

We ate sausages and drank rose wine. That’s our personal romantic.

15 minutes before midnight. We shared our New Year resolutions. They had a common point.

We kissed at midnight. I felt warm, safe, and happy.

This New Year Eve convinced me again — magic exists. Just find it in simple things.
