Adults do not lack imagination. We perfect it.

We describe children’s imagination as limitless. But kids don’t know shit—the beautiful, defining innocence of childhood. My boy asks when we can see the next Ghostbusters. I explain that someone…

Vice for News

Everyone is on social media, so much that most of us get our news and information from it! News outlets use social media to lure people in with catchy phrases and pictures. Journalists use social media to connect with readers and have a better understanding of what they want to see. Social media also allows for journalists to receive feedback and a bigger audience.

News outlets use social media to promote their stories. Due to the visual nature of social media, Journalists use platforms like Twitter to post links to their story online. Using catchy phrases as captions and an appealing photograph will allow more curious readers. Many people may even call this “click bait.”

This tactic can become a bad one too. For instance, Vice has a bad reputation for an increase in bad journalism over the past couple of years. Using social media as a tool to promote “click bait” and pass that off as real journalism can be damaging. Interestingly enough, many people now see Vice as an ‘entertainment’ news source instead of ‘real news.’

Social media connects us all. With the fast wide-spread of information, there is always room for error. The amount of “fake news” that is spread online is something all internet users need to keep in mind when digesting information. Imagine being at a party with several people and using the fake news you read online as a conversation starter stated as a fact. Or…. is that just my biggest fear?

What is something that Journalists have now that they did not have 10 years ago? Social media profiles. Journalism is personal now. Where is your news coming from and who is this person reporting? People want to know Journalists now and how much they can trust them. Getting a glimpse into their personal lives allow for readers to create a sense of admiration and validity.

Journalists have Twitter, Instagram, blogs, podcasts, and Facebook accounts that allow us to follow and have a better sense of who they really are as people. Social media allows for people to feel more connected. Journalists know that by growing their following, they are also exposing more of their potential work.

Social media also allows news outlets and Journalists to interact daily. As readers, we are able to provide feedback to journalists about their content. For instance, if a news outlets article is out of line, out of touch, or simply not relevant to consumers, people can instantly reach out and recieve a quick response. Sometimes its the opposite, maybe readers want to express how much they enjoyed the article or the Journalists style of writing. And for those of us who like to observe drama from afar, there’s some tweets too.

Journalism is important. Social media is important. Real news is important! As internet readers, its our social responsibility to share and know news with with facts and free from lies and fear mongering. It’s important that we take on that responsibility and do our own research before we become a bunch of sheep and follow and believe everything that is headed our direction.
