A.I. Took My Editing Job

How my main source of income dissolved in 3 months.

I could smell the blood in the water by mid-February.

I freelanced for a small, husband-wife-owned media company for over 4 years as editor-in-chief and a regular writer/contributor. The company owned several websites, all of them blogs, as well as a profitable YouTube channel. With them, I learned a lot about SEO writing, keyword management, affiliate marketing, and the blogging industry as a whole.

It was the perfect job for a girl in her 20s trying to break into the freelancing and publishing business. I cherished my time with them.

But nothing ever lasts.

In December of 2022, a friend of mine introduced me to ChatGPT.

“Have you seen this?” he asked. “It’s new, but it’s blowing up online.”

“No, what is it?”

“It’s an A.I. writing bot, and it’s coming for your job,” he joked.

We laughed.

I didn’t think ChatGPT would take my writing job, but over the next few weeks, I saw that many writers were scared.

Medium authors, members of my writing groups, and fellow freelancers were asking some very important questions:

I didn’t think so.

ChatGPT at the time was slow, repetitive, and stuck relying on data without the internet. Its information comes from 2021 or before, and at the time, it was in its clunky beginning phase.

In my arrogance, I even wrote an article about it. Here is my closing statement:
