Some Thoughts On Naruto.

Fantasy Edition

Read about what you want to write. For me, it was reading all sorts of fantasy stories before I realised, I can also write my own. Though that may have had a lot more to do with coming to a point where I had run out of things to read. I don’t know what attracted me to the fantasy genre. All I know is that every time I read a good fantasy story, I get the warm feeling I got with my bedtime stories as a child. And as you may have guessed at this point, my bedtime stories came from an illustrated book of well-known fairy tales.

So the question is: is Naruto a Fantasy story?

I first started watching Naruto because it came up on a list that was like the original anime I loved to watch: Inuyasha. The underlying story of Naruto is an endearing one, a boy who succeeds against all odds. Indeed, such a story falls right in line with the tenants of an underdog story. Just look at the following definition by writepractice.com:

This definition is Naruto to a tee. Yet thinking about it now this is not what has kept me watching Naruto over the years and now bingeing the sequel Boruto. It is because the Naruto story fits right in with the fantasy genre. Set in a completely different universe. Having clear lore and history that makes the world as real as my own. Check and check for it belonging to the fantasy genre. I suppose I should have realised that all that talk of Naruto using Japanese mythology should have been the biggest clue all along.

As a Fantasy writer, I am prone to get addicted to fantasy stories that give me that warm feeling I got from fairy tales as a child. Now I understand this feeling to be what makes the story that I am experiencing, special. Referring to my previous post on “Why you never write in a vacuum”, fantasy stories, in general, are a continuation of other stories that came before them. Naruto also fits this mould yet there is one thing it does very well, and that is its use of villains.
