The Horrific and Tragic Story Behind This Photo

It even got to the point where she began hallucinating, saying she didn’t want to be late for an exam, it was a horrible sight to behold.

Omarya Sanchez of Colombia lost her life in a horrific, slow, and agonizing manner.

The Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupted in 1985. The debris would eventually mix with ice to form lahars (heavy sticky landslides, mudflows, and debris flows)

The lahar rushed into a small village in the valleys named Armero, killing more than 25,000 persons in the process. It also destroyed more than 13 other villages.

Omarya was unfortunately one of the victims, as the lahar rushed into her home, demolished it, and pinned her against the debris.

When rescuers came to assist her, they found out that her legs were trapped under her house’s roof (that’s how much lahar they were dealing with). One of the rescuers narrating the ordeal said she was trapped up to her waist, while another explained that she was trapped up to her neck.

For the first few hours after the incident, she was still almost totally covered in the heavy mixture, but managed to get her hands free.

A rescuer noticed her hands and then beckoned on the others to help clear out the broken wood and tiles that surrounded her. This took close to an entire day to finish.

Soon, they were able to clear some of the debris till her waist was slightly visible, after which they attempted to pull her out. However, they discovered that anytime she was pulled, the water will flow and gather quickly around her, making it seem like she was going to drown.

In order to keep her afloat, her rescuers placed a tyre around her body.

She surprisingly remained calm for a while as relief workers battled to rescue her.

The battle lasted for more than 60 hours, during which she sang to a journalist who was also working as a volunteer, asked for food and a can of soda because she was hungry, and even agreed to be interviewed.
